Why does animal husbandry seem to consist so much of looking at the south end of northbound critters?

This is, obviously, a feeder. The keyhole opening is so that they can get their heads in, but can’t pull hay out of the feeder and strew it all over the ground.

This is a toybox. It provides some shade (of which there is plenty in the stable), but mostly an opportunity to play king of the hill.
Fred, our quarterhorse, has reacted in a most amazing way. Clearly, he thinks of these gals as his herd.
